FATAH: 900 million Indian voters will teach us democracy in April

As Indians head to the polls next month to elect their 17th ‘Lok Sabha’ (House of the People), the numbers involved are staggering, beyond the imagination of most people on Earth. So vast is the country, the voting will be conducted in seven phases starting April 11 and ending on May 19 with the votes counted on May 23.

But for Indians and their diaspora scattered in Canada and around the globe, the elections will be one more chance to embark on the world’s biggest exercise in democracy; a luxury denied to most of the developing world, but one Indians have enjoyed since their country gained independence from Britain in 1947, marking the end of over 800 years of foreign occupation.

The size of the electorate is 900 million eligible voters. Imagine that. In 2014, the last time Indians voted and elected Prime Minister Narendra Modi, over 830 million people were eligible to vote — and........
