TOWHEY: Less talk, more action on mental health required

On Wednesday, millions of people across Canada and around the world texted and tweeted in support of Bell’s annual “Let’s Talk Day” to de-stigmatize mental illness and raise funds for mental health care.

I was not one of them.

For the first time in years, I did not tweet. I did not text. I did not talk.

Instead, I spent the day desperately trying to get mental health care for someone I love dearly. We’ve been trying for three years. So far, we have failed.

The #BellLetsTalk hashtag was tweeted and texted 154 million times Wednesday and Bell will donate $7.7 million to mental health causes. The money will be put to good use.

More importantly, Bell’s initiative sparks public and private conversations about mental health.

And, it forces political and community leaders to speak up, lest their absences be noticed among all the talking.

But nothing actually gets........
