I know it’s Christmas Eve and we’re all supposed to be sitting by a roaring fire savouring an adult beverage and enjoying one of those rare moments when daily life actually seems to slow down.

Our society doesn’t shut down the way it once did for the whole of Christmas Day (and parts of the 24th and 26th).

I remember one year while I was still in university and my sister was living in Victoria. I was at home in Medicine Hat for the Christmas break and my mom asked me to drive to Calgary on Dec. 24 to pick my sister up at the airport and bring her home.

I had to be very conscious to get to Calgary before 6 p.m. and find a gas station that was still open so I could top-up my tank because on Christmas Eve, even highway truck stops were closed after 6 p.m. If you were running low on fuel, you have to pull over until Dec.........
