Corbella: Rule of law not vital to MPs in Omar Khadr case, just SNC

“Canada believes in the rule of law, not arbitrary measures.”

You might think those words were written in reference to the SNC-Lavalin controversy but, no, I wrote that sentence in an unsigned Calgary Herald editorial published on Nov. 3, 2010.

Clearly, that almost nine-year-old editorial was not referring to the unrelenting pressure Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his staff exerted upon former attorney general, Jody Wilson-Raybould to reverse the director of public prosecution’s decision to proceed with a criminal trial against Quebec-based SNC-Lavalin, rather than offer the engineering-and-construction giant a deferred prosecution agreement related to accusations of bribery.

Instead, that opening sentence about the importance of the rule of law was referring to — wait for it — Omar Khadr. Does that change your mind about the importance of the rule of law? It might, but you mustn’t let it.

The opinion piece, entitled, “Welcome back Khadr? If we really believe in the rule of law, yes,” was met........
