SNOBELEN: Pandemic has exposed many public service failings

This week Ontario Health Minister Christine Elliott announced that Jane Philpott would lead the effort to fix the COVID-19 data mess. Philpott is an inspired choice.

I suspect that Philpott is one of the few people with the gravitas and inclination to break down health-care fiefdoms and nudge public health into the 21st century.

This pandemic has been tragic on many fronts, but if there is a silver lining, it is the urgency to make government better.

As former Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel once opined, “Never let a good crisis go to waste.”

Perhaps it takes a pandemic to finally fix the deadly flaws in health data. Obviously, studies, reports and audits, in normal times, have no effect.

Way back in 2016, the Ontario Auditor General reported that eHealth Ontario, after 14 years and $8 billion dollars, was unfinished. Fast forward to 2020 and the eHealth........
