HASSAN: Let's not delude ourselves about Saudi Arabia

Back in July, I wrote about Saudi reforms under the influential Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Women no longer suffered arbitrary arrest from the Hai’a – religious police – and had won the right to drive. The new prince seemed determined to deliver social progress.

It was a mixed message, however. The fact that some dissenting conservative clerics were placed under house arrest showed that change was never going to be as easy as it might be in a more progressive nation.

In August I covered the diplomatic spat between Saudi Arabia and Canada over perceived Canadian interference in Saudi internal affairs concerning the detention of some critics of the regime. This froze some symbolic trade and educational links and caused the expulsion of Canadian ambassador Dennis Horak.
