PASSIFIUME: COVID-19 prompts truckers to think twice about U.S. runs

It’s getting so that he’s afraid to walk through his front door.

Grant Warburton, a long-haul truck driver for the past 25 years, is worried about COVID-19 — particularly when his destination is south of the border.

“Every single time I go into the States, I feel like … is this going to be the day I bring it home to my family?”

Warburton, an owner-operator who lives in Cambridge, Ont., isn’t the only driver watching what’s going on in the United States with growing concern.

Drivers, he said, are already beginning to refuse runs to the U.S. — a buddy of his this week turned down a load destined for Georgia.

“I think that that’s going to be a growing trend,” he said.

“At some point, I’m going to make that decision myself. Just me alone, that’s just one truck off the road and it won’t make much difference, but........
