Donald Trump said again on Tuesday that he doesn’t want Canada building cars. As Mark Carney visits Chinese leaders in Beijing, he should know that Xi Jinping feels the same way.

Xi’s plan to flood the market with Chinese vehicles isn’t just about challenging Canada’s struggling electric-vehicle sector, it’s about total automotive market domination.

That’s what China is headed towards in Europe where it started 2025 with less than three per cent market share for new sales and ended with more than 10 per cent. It’s what is happening in Brazil where Chinese vehicles are overtaking European and Japanese brands for new car sales.

China doesn’t just want market access; it wants market domination. The Chinese want to put our auto market out of business.

The question is, will we let them?
