Families across Windsor and Essex County are being squeezed from every direction.

Household budgets are under strain. Despite some improvement, the costs of a mortgage or rents are historically high and out of reach for many residents. Construction activity is slowing and economic uncertainty continues to weigh on businesses and workers alike.

That is the reality facing many residents in Windsor and Essex County. It is also the context in which Essex County Council is considering a new development charge bylaw in the coming week that would add almost $13,000 to the cost of a newly built single-family or semi-detached home (almost $6,900 per apartment unit).

What makes this proposal especially concerning is that Essex County does not currently charge development fees at the county level.
