I’m 87 years old now, but I still remember my dad’s birthday, seeing he was born on Dec. 18, 1882, a date so close to Christmas.

His father was lost at sea when a young man and at 17 years old he lied about his age and joined the British Army, serving in Burma for over 14 years, then immigrating to Canada and serving in our military during the First World War.

He was a lean man of short stature, with a mind of his own. During the Great Depression he........
