Sen. Mike Rounds: For Presidents Day, bring back the spirit of compromise held by our Founding Fathers

Presidents Day is a federal holiday to honor and recognize those who have served as president of our great nation. Having served in the highest elected office, our presidents have led the country through wars, crises, the Industrial Revolution, and numerous cultural transformations, making countless decisions that have led us to our current place as the leader of the free world. We are grateful for everything they’ve done to make our country what it is today, largely by working together, with political friends and foes alike, to move our country forward.

In his State of the Union address earlier this month, President Trump highlighted some of the bipartisan achievements we’ve accomplished in the past two years. At a time when it often feels like “working together” is a four-letter word, he also made a strong case for more bipartisanship in Washington. I couldn’t agree more. Compromise and consensus building are essential in our system of government if we are to truly tackle the tough issues before us.
