Science unsettled: get the education balance right

Blurry and fuzzy though it was, an image of the seemingly impossible captivated the world last week. A dim orange disc surrounds an object that can never truly be seen, a black hole with the mass of six billion suns in a galaxy 53 light years from Earth.

In moments such as these, and with breakthroughs that are smaller in scale but with greater capacity to change everyday lives, it is easy to understand the attraction of science as a career.

Unfortunately, for all the emphasis governments and universities have placed on the subject (science is the 's' in the much-vaunted STEM disciplines), studies show science graduates have a harder time finding a career in their field than others.........
