The problems that slip from the political radar when cameras are off

Sometimes we ignore the obvious problems because they’re either too hard or just don’t create enough glory for those who fix them.

As this election reaches its dying days, I wonder about all those problems that desperately need a resolution - but have just failed to make it onto the electoral radar.


It an enormous pity because if we can’t fix simple things, then how can we fix the really big problems we hope those who form government will turn their hands to?

What’s painful is that many of these issues have grabbed political attention when it’s been expedient - but then slipped off the radar when the television cameras were turned off, and our politicians found another spotlight.

Take domestic violence. Both state and federal governments have rightly made a big play of tackling its problems.

The task forces have shown a way forward. Politicians have given more profile to an issue that was rarely discussed a generation ago and resources are flowing........
