VICTORIA — Premier David Eby continued his retreat from drug decriminalization this week without saying what happens when federal authorization for the experiment expires at the end of the month.

“We’re working closely with the federal government on this,” Eby told reporters on Tuesday. “I look forward to having more to share about that soon.

“But let me be clear: We are not going back to the old policy of decriminalized public drug use in BC. It didn’t work, and we ended that.”

It was not the first time that Eby acknowledged the failure of a policy he once defended as a way of saving lives by reducing the stigma and penalties for drug use.
