VICTORIA — Premier David Eby suffered a major setback last week in his promise to take “a lead role” in turning things around on Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.

The bad news came Tuesday when London Drugs announced the closure of its store in the Woodward’s building, a development that was supposed to “anchor” a revival of the adjacent DTES.

Eby’s office asked if the giant retailer would reconsider, in a last-ditch call from the premier’s representative to company president Clint Mahlman.

But Mahlman reaffirmed the company’s decision to shutter the outlet on Feb. 1.
