Vancouver’s ruling ABC party says they will back away from their plan to freeze the work of the city’s integrity commissioner, after hearing the public’s opposition “loud and clear.”
Council had a special meeting Wednesday to approve a bylaw amendment that would shut down the commissioner’s work while council obtains a third-party review of the office’s mandate and operation. This stemmed from ABC council members’ direction at a July meeting, which prompted criticism and questions about why ABC wanted to shut down the office of the commissioner, an independent lawyer who investigates complaints about municipal politicians, for an undetermined period to do a review.
