Broken promise: Biden shamefully leaves behind Americans in Afghanistan

1 46 89

This is how the U.S. mission in Afghanistan ends. With a bang. And a whimper.

The last American soldier left the country. President Joe Biden issued a flimsy written statement Monday. Secretary of State Antony Blinken delivered a dispiriting address.

America can no longer with a straight face say we leave no one behind. And the people I’ve spoken with in Indiana are seething, embarrassed, ashamed.

Thirteen American servicemen and women, including a Marine from my home state of Indiana, are dead on account of this disastrous “retrograde” from Afghanistan.

Many more American citizens – more than 100 by Secretary Blinken’s rosy estimate – are still awaiting evacuation. This happened despite the president's promise Aug. 20 that "we will get you home."

And an undeclared number of Afghan nationals who helped Americans over the past 20 years face an uncertain future.

The self-proclaimed “most qualified person in the country” to be president has botched his first major foreign policy challenge. Strategically, the United States aimed to shift more attention to Asia; instead, our nation must now attend to extricating those we abandoned while repairing our damaged reputation among allies and adversaries.
