Our View: Ida underscores nation's hellish battle with climate change

Louisiana Highway 1 is a winding two-lane highway that passes through New Orleans and ends at the state's southernmost harbor, Port Fourchon. It was near there that Hurricane Ida made landfall Sunday, flooding homes, ripping off roofs and leaving hundreds of thousands without electricity, water and sewerage.

Gov. John Bel Edwards said Ida delivered one of Louisiana's worst direct hits in modern times. The storm made landfall a year after massive Hurricane Laura punished the Pelican State, and 16 years to the day after Katrina ravaged New Orleans and shocked the nation.

Unless government leaders and the public heed experts' warning cries to act quickly and aggressively, climate change will create a nightmarish parade of monster hurricanes in the decades to come. It also will spawn other deadly floods like the one that tormented Tennessee this month and massive wildfires like those now scaring huge swaths of the American........
