Our View: Hold Facebook accountable if Instagram harms teens

Asked about the mental health impact of social media on children, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg told Congress this year, "The research that we've seen is that using social apps to connect with other people can have positive mental health benefits."

That's not the whole story.

According to documents uncovered by The Wall Street Journal, Facebook has spent years doing research that shows just the opposite. The research was cited in a "presentation given to Mr. Zuckerberg" the year before his testimony to Congress in March.

The research raised concerns about how teens' mental health is hurt by the use of Instagram, a Facebook social media platform that attracts 22 million U.S. teens each day:

►"Among teens who reported suicidal thoughts, 13% of British users and 6% of American users traced the desire to kill themselves to Instagram," The Journal reported about Facebook's own research.
