Democrats 'missed the mood': Former CNN host reflects on why Trump won

Donald Trump’s decisive reelection victory this month has led to a lot of soul-searching, not just among Democrats and progressives – but also among many of their acolytes in the legacy news media.

It turns out the media as a whole greatly misread the moment, ignoring what a majority of voters were actually thinking and feeling. And not for the first time.

It's one reason why trust in the media is at all time lows – 31%, down there in the dumps with how the country views Congress.

No surprise, ratings have tanked at networks like MSNBC, and there are rumors that CNN could be facing major layoffs to offset declines in viewership. Even ABC’s “The View,” which sounded for months like an advertisement for Vice President Kamala Harris, is allegedly considering bringing on “pro-Trump” voices.

Meanwhile, Fox News, which liberals love to scoff at, has dominated ratings and has welcomed a growing audience with open arms.

Cable startup NewsNation also has seen significant growth in recent years, and it hopes to attract viewers upset with the partisanship of legacy standbys.

NewsNation’s top primetime show, “Cuomo,” is hosted by Chris Cuomo, who hosted a popular prime-time show on CNN until he was fired in 2021.

I recently spoke with Cuomo about the presidential election, his views on his job and the media industry, as well as the pitfalls of the two-party political system. Our interview has been edited lightly for clarity and length.
