Facts About the Michigan 2024 Primary

Michiganders on Tuesday will choose their favorite Democratic and Republican candidates in the 2024 nominating process, and while there are unlikely to be surprise overall results, Michigan’s battleground status in the general election makes it worth watching.

Fresh off a South Carolina primary win, former President Donald Trump – the legally embattled GOP front-runner – will face former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, who is staying in the Republican race despite losing her home state days ago. Trump is polling even more strongly against Haley in Michigan than he was in the Palmetto State before his victory there.

President Joe Biden, meanwhile, will again be up against Rep. Dean Phillips of Minnesota. Author Marianne Williamson dropped out of the race earlier this month, but is still on the ballot. While the president is very likely to win the contest as the incumbent, he has faced criticism from Michigan’s sizable Arab American community amid his strong support for Israel in its war against Hamas in Gaza. Some state leaders, such as Democratic Rep. Rashida Tlaib, have pushed for an “uncommitted” vote to send a message about Biden’s handling of the war, according to the AP, which could result in some embarrassment for the president.
