FATAH: Canada should embrace the new India

Few politicians have endured the hostility of their country’s liberal and left-wing elite and come back to knock them out like Muhammad Ali floored Sonny Liston in his 1965 heavyweight boxing match.

Last week, 54 years later, a similar knockout punch came from India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) when he defeated the country’s ruling dynasty of the Nehrus and Gandhis, and mopped the floor with their surrogates.

When the final vote was counted on India’s indigenous electronic voting machines, the man who grew up as a boy selling tea at a roadside shop had won 303 seats in the Indian Lok Sabha (House of Commons) against his main rival, Rahul Gandhi of the Indian National Congress, who managed to scrape only 53 seats and had zero seats in 13 of India’s 29 states.
