FILEY: The little bridge that couldn’t …or wouldn’t

My wife Yarmila and I don’t get out to the theatre very often, but one stage play we were fortunate enough to see was the Canadian play Come from Away.

Entertaining? Certainly, though we didn’t understand some of the expressions that had members of the audience roaring with laughter.

We’ll have to brush up on our “Newfinese”.

And as an added extra, the audience of locals must have felt a special pride knowing how our east coast citizens came to the aid of hundreds of terrified American “visitors” following the brazen Sept. 11 terror attacks.

The other day while looking for a place to have lunch somewhere along the city’s ever changing waterfront, I recalled that the Keating Channel Pub on Villiers St. in the Portlands was a good bet.

While searching for a way to get at the place, and being stymied by the Cherry St. bridge that refuses to be lowered, I was suddenly reminded of the title of the play we had recently enjoyed.

It was as if the pub was saying “Come From Away” — while I........
