Police responded rapidly to the scene and closed all eastbound lanes of the highway. Firefighters extinguished the fire and rescued the victims. Paramedics treated and evacuated the injured. Police surveyed the accident scene. Recovery teams removed the wrecks.

The highway was re-opened to traffic at about 10:30 a.m. — 13 hours after the accident occurred. In the meantime, Monday morning rush hour traffic, lighter than usual because of the summer, was chaos.
