AGAR: Former mayoral candidate driving war against car

2 22 0

Some people say there is no war on the car, but there is in Toronto and the conflict is boosted regularly by Jennifer Keesmaat.

Over the weekend Keesmaat, a former chief city planner and one-time mayoral candidate who apparently still wants to re-engineer this city, tweeted: “Roads are paid for through municipal taxes — not what is collected at the pump. So there is no connection between using roads and paying for them in Canadian cities. We need less driving to reduce congestion and to mitigate climate change — so we should price driving fairly.”

That would just be another uninformed or disingenuous message from the Twitterverse but for the fact that Keesmaat has some influence and an audience, so it bears considering.

There are several problems with her argument.
