HASSAN: Saudi Arabia's system is still draconian for women

Detained Saudi activist Loujain al-Hathloul was arrested last year for defying the ban on women driving in Saudi Arabia — a ban which was actually lifted months ago. Although she’s rejected a deal for her release because she refuses to publicly state that she was not tortured or threatened in custody.

It seems a travesty to us in the Western world that someone could be arrested just for being the wrong gender behind the wheel, but Saudi Arabia has only recently allowed women to drive. Other rights of women are still as limited as ever, even to the point where they must seek permission to travel overseas and even to marry the husband they choose. Al-Hathloul has tirelessly campaigned especially to overturn the overriding male guardianship law, so that women are not perpetually infantilized.
