If the mention of Communism in Canada evokes anything at all in the minds of regular Canadians, it’s probably of the poor showings received by fringe parties like the Communists and Marxist-Leninists in provincial and federal elections.

That these parties are typically represented by oddballs who only receive a few dozen votes is a fitting symbol for how most people in this country probably feel about Communism – a political ideology that hasn’t been taken seriously for decades, something relegated to the dustbin of history.

That’s changing. A new form of Communist appreciation is showing up on the streets of Canada, quite literally. And this one has little to do with Russia or Fidel Castro. It’s about Beijing and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
