Editorial: With planned cutbacks, Amtrak is on the wrong track

Starting next month, Amtrak will cut three daily round trips between Rensselaer and New York City. That's unacceptable.

As the Times Union's Rick Karlin reported, the schedule is being reduced because of rehabilitation work planned for the East River tunnels in New York City, a three-year project that will limit the number of Amtrak trains that can travel from maintenance yards in Queens to the Moynihan Train Hall at Penn Station.

We understand the work is needed and some impact on service is likely unavoidable. But according to the Empire State Passengers Association, the new schedule, beginning Nov. 11, will have a heavier impact on the Hudson Valley than on train services that run to places like Long Island or New Jersey.
