The John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts received its name from Congress at the request of President Lyndon Johnson in early 1964, when the assassination in Dallas was still a fresh wound in the nation’s psyche. The legislation to name the facility — to that point referred to as the National Cultural Center, befitting its Cold War-era mission to serve as a showcase for the artistic accomplishments of free nations — as a “living memorial” to the fallen president can be read in this country’s annals of law.
