Editorial: Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office puts some teeth into FOIL

It’s not often we are surprised and delighted by the actions of public officials when it comes to the Freedom of Information law.

But then there was the Times Union's Wendy Liberatore’s report detailing the latest incident in Saratoga County in which public officials are siccing law enforcement on one another.

Saratoga Springs Republican Party chair Michael Brandi has accused Dillon Moran, the city’s Democratic commissioner of accounts, of improperly handling Mr. Brandi’s FOIL request for public records regarding the city’s proposed short-term rental regulations.

Mr. Brandi requested all records, including things like text messages, and was told that no such records exist. But Mr. Brandi had a smoking gun: a text message string involving a third person and Mr.........
