Editorial: Intolerance on the bench

If Felicia Pitts Davis wants to live out her religious faith in the public sphere, let her become a preacher. But if she wants to keep serving as a Syracuse City Court judge, she’ll need to let the laws of New York guide her conduct on the bench.

This seemingly uncontroversial point apparently needs to be made to the judge, who as part of her Saturday shift on Nov. 16 was slated to preside over two wedding ceremonies. The first, between a man and a woman, proceeded as planned.

As reported by The Post-Standard and other regional outlets, Shawntay Davis and Niccora Davis (no relation to the judge) rose to be married, at which point the judge got up without a word and left the courtroom; 10 minutes later, another judge arrived to perform the ceremony.........
