License issue just the start

Upon reflection, the easy part was passing the law last month aimed at putting state-endorsed New York driver's licenses in the hands of illegal aliens.

But now when it's about making it stick, success seems even more elusive. Then again, define success. A federal judge, or even eventually the U.S. Supreme Court, may do that for us.

This is going to be a bitterly divisive and drawn out affair, ending up as easily hurting as helping the community it was supposed to benefit, whether deserved or not. Politically, socially, legally, it's a minefield. Anyone naive enough to think all will be resolved and hunky-dory by mid-December when the law goes into effect does not grasp the speed of our legal system, or the bigger picture here. Because the license issue is only part of a much larger emerging civil war in New York and the nation as a whole over just how far we should bend, if at all, for those who are here illegally, a context not lost on our federal judges.

Here in New York, as recently voiced by Attorney General Letitia James over this weekend's anticipated Immigration and Custom Enforcement (ICE) actions in New York City, there's a steady drift by officials toward lumping together all immigrants in the state, whether here legally or not,........
