Churchill: The reason Trump won isn't as complicated as it may seem

Why did Donald Trump win so decisively? The answer is obvious: Peanut. He won because New York killed Peanut the squirrel.

That’s a joke. No, for real, I’m kidding.

The actual reason Trump is the next president is much more mundane. He won mostly because of honest-to-goodness issues, inflation, illegal immigration and war above all. Sorry if that’s boring, but this election wasn’t any more complicated than that.

Those were the reasons Joe Biden was behind in the polls before he dropped out of the race. And those are the reasons his quick replacement, Kamala Harris, lost so big on Tuesday, underperforming with working-class voters who, as it happens, are the people most impacted by inflation and illegal immigration.

They’re also the people who fight our wars, which means they have the biggest reason to worry about conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine.

Yes, Trump’s first term was obviously and unnecessarily chaotic. Nevertheless, many Americans liked the world as it was in 2019. Their wages were rising, the southern border was somewhat secure and the world was relatively peaceful. If not for the pandemic, Trump would have won........
