Some advice for Democrats in the state Assembly: The next time you're handed a chance to help the children and spouses of dead soldiers, don't hesitate.

You wouldn't think the advice would be necessary, since helping Gold Star families is the right thing to do both politically and morally. And yet, Assembly Democrats managed to blow this one, embarrassing themselves and all of New York in the process.

At issue was a bill, proposed by Assemblyman Stephen Hawley, a Republican from Geneva, that sought to cover SUNY and CUNY tuition and room and board for the children of military veterans who were killed or disabled while serving, even if they didn't die during combat. Last week, Democrats voted to block the bill.


Well, Democrats came up with lame excuses about the cost and the timing of the legislation. But here's the truth: They just didn't care enough about veterans to push it through and didn't want to pass anything initially proposed by Republicans.
