Churchill: On a patriotic weekend, divisions big and small

1 0 0

Has the silliness and the divisiveness of our national debate ever seemed more removed from the sturdy reality of American life?

Consider, if you will, just a few of the controversies that have riveted the public (not really) before and during this Fourth of July holiday weekend:

• The Betsy Ross sneaker. Nike decided to pull its shoe featuring the so-called Betsy Ross flag after Colin Kaepernick, the former football player and current social activist, objected to it. The flag has occasionally been used by white supremacists but overwhelmingly it's also a symbol for many, many others with no ill intentions. Kapernick's obtuse preening raises, for me at least, two immediate questions.

The objection would have made more sense if Kaepernick thought Nike was producing a Betsy DeVos sneaker? Why do companies like Nike so frequently give in to this stuff?

• Megan Rapinoe vs. Donald Trump. The star of the women's national soccer team said she won't visit the White House if her team wins the World Cup on Sunday causing President Trump, hardly a master of restraint, to inevitably fire back........
