A week before Thanksgiving, Arthur King received news he had long feared: A body found in Troy was Amanda, his daughter, who’d been missing for 11 years.
“You perform hypnosis on yourself, a little magical thinking,” Arthur said this week, ahead of Amanda’s Tuesday funeral. “You hold out hope that she’s alive and living a good life somewhere. You make up these stories to get you through the day, but in the back of your mind, you know what reality is — that she’s gone and not coming back. But it still comes as a shock when you get the news.”
When Arthur last saw his daughter, she was 27 years old and addicted to heroin.
