Churchill: Dan McCoy orchestrates a coup at the Albany airport

ALBANY — For decades, Phil Calderone has been the guy who made things work around here — behind the scenes for former Albany Mayor Jerry Jennings and County Executive Dan McCoy, and for the past five years as CEO of the Albany County Airport Authority.

He is competence personified. He is a person everybody likes and respects. And he just got the guillotine. That’s Albany for you.

It gets worse: As Brendan J. Lyons and Steve Hughes first reported in a blockbuster Times Union story, the Airport Authority’s board voted Monday to oust Calderone so that … wait for it … McCoy can get the job. Seriously!

That would be a board, by the way, that McCoy has stacked with his allies, suggesting that this move has been in the works for some time. Indeed, it has been an open secret, spilled by McCoy himself in numerous conversations, that the Democrat wanted the job. He’s planned for this. He’s talked openly about it. He’s poised to pull it off.........
