Time caught up with Keith Raniere.

For years, his crimes were widely known and visible to those who cared to look. Newspapers, including the Times Union, exposed what the NXIVM founder was doing. But prosecutors mostly looked the other way — until suddenly they didn't.

Time may have finally caught up with Jeffrey Epstein, who was arrested at an airport on Saturday and charged with sex trafficking.

The billionaire financier's behavior was widely known and visible to those who cared to look. Investigative news outlets, particularly the Miami Herald, did stellar reporting. But prosecutors mostly looked the other way — until suddenly they didn't.

Epstein is accused, as Raniere was, of being a serial predator who employed a cult-like network to supply him with vulnerable women to groom and abuse. Both men, according to prosecutors, operated a sex-trafficking scheme that treated under-aged women as sexual slaves.

The similarities don't end there: Both men were also considered charming geniuses by supporters who, intentionally or not, enabled and empowered their predatory........
