David Sovka: You think what you eat (brought to you by Frito-Lay)

I’m trying to remember that condescending phrase that athletic, healthy people say to the rest of us all the time … Not “hello.” Not “please have my bus seat.”

Ah yes, I recall it now: “You are what you eat.”

Unfortunately, they are correct: Nutrients from the food we eat are the building blocks of our bodies. And not only that, according to medical science, we think what we eat.

For example, the types of food you eat affect what you think and how you feel about the following:

• immigration

• vaccination

• climate change

• Sydney Sweeney’s jeans/genes

To help people identify different types of food, a system invented by Brazilian scientists divides food into four categories based on how many chemicals can be added before any remaining grown-ups in society put a stop to it:

1. unprocessed

2. processed

3. ultra-processed

4. anything from 7-11’s “rapid cook” ovens

Unprocessed foods are the OG edible parts of plants, animals, algae and fungi. Examples include apples, eggs and dirty hippies from Salt Spring Island. These foods are just how God made them, without additives like salt and sugar to make them taste good.

Unprocessed foods can have added vitamins and minerals, like how vitamin D is added to milk to prevent our sun-deprived bones in........
