Les Leyne: Election fake news worries persist
MLAs in the B.C. legislature have eased their minds about a number of glitches in the 2024 general election, but there are still worries about the misinformation and disinformation that was spewed during the campaign.
Concerns, particularly in the Conservative Party of B.C., about problems that emerged during the closest vote in provincial history prompted the unusual move this year of referring Elections B.C.’s final report to a special committee on democratic and electoral reform.
The all-party committee’s report said “challenges and errors” occurred but expressed confidence in the integrity of the election, which cost $82 million to run.
It was administered fairly, accurately and transparently, said the final report.
“While some mistakes occurred, they were due to human error, which is challenging to eliminate in an operation as complex as a general election.”
During a judicial recount, a box with 861 ballots in Prince George was found to have not been counted. Five electoral districts did not fully report votes that were cast outside the ridings, which made for minor........
