A man was seriously injured in the early hours of Saturday morning when police opened fire toward his vehicle when he wouldn’t stop at a checkpoint set up to apprehend car thieves in Jerusalem.
According to a statement by police, the driver arrived at the checkpoint and “arose suspicions.”
Police said an officer approached the vehicle to question the man, who drove off in a “wild manner,” which they said endangered other road-users.
Police said they chased the vehicle, which eventually came to a stop.
Officers approached the vehicle and began to open the car door, at which point the driver again drove off.
According to police, the driver hit other vehicles and was endangering drivers, so police opened fire toward the vehicle in an attempt to stop him.
The driver continued but eventually came to a stop after he “lost control of his vehicle,” police said.
The man was seriously injured but it was unclear if his wounds were the result of the gunfire or crash.
The driver was taken to hospital for medical treatment, as was a woman who was lightly injured in a collision with the suspect’s car.
Police said they found a knife in the suspect’s car and they have opened an investigation into the incident.
