Israel’s Olympic baseball team loses first match 6-5 to South Korea

In a dramatic Olympic baseball opening game in Tokyo on Thursday, Israel lost to South Korea 6-5.

With the game tied up 5-5 in the bottom of the 9th inning at the Yokohama Baseball Stadium south of Tokyo, the match headed into extra innings. And with a twist end to the game, the South Korean team scored a point when its batter was hit by a pitch thrown by Israel’s Jeremy Bleich while the bases were loaded.

Israel will play against the US team on Friday evening in Tokyo. If it loses that match, it will head into a knockout round game next week.

This year marks the return of Olympic baseball for the first time since 2008, as well as the first time Israel has sent a baseball team to the games. In 2008, South Korea took gold, Cuba silver and the US bronze.

Israel’s national baseball team, which is ranked 24th in the world, overcame the odds to qualify for the Olympics, where only six countries’ teams are facing off for the three medals. In 2017, Israel beat South Korea at........
