Prudent See Danger: Dennis Coyle’s 421 Days in Taliban Hands Ends in Freedom

Dennis Coyle stepped off the plane in Texas this week after 421 days in Taliban captivity. The 64-year-old Christian linguist from Pueblo, Colorado, had worked legally in Afghanistan for nearly twenty years developing language resources for local communities. Seized from his Kabul apartment on January 27, 2025, he endured harsh conditions with little outside contact and no formal charges ever filed. His release on March 24, 2026, came as an Eid al-Fitr “humanitarian gesture” after sustained U.S. pressure and a family appeal to the Taliban supreme leader.

A Clear Biblical Warning

Proverbs 22:3 states plainly, “The prudent see danger and take cover, but the simple keep going and suffer the consequences.” Coyle’s long ordeal puts flesh on that verse. He chose to remain in a land controlled by a regime that openly aligns with forces dedicated to Israel’s destruction. The Taliban, like Iran and its proxies, has never hidden its hostility toward the Jewish state and the West. The result was 421 days stolen from a man simply trying to serve through language work.

The Sages Teach Distance

The Sages in Pirkei Avot record the clear instruction: keep far from a bad neighbor and do not consort with the wicked. This is not a call to hate people but a command to guard life and faithfulness with open eyes. Deuteronomy 7:2-4 warns Israel against making covenants with nations determined to turn God’s people away from Him. Those same nations become snares and traps, exactly as Joshua 23:13 describes. Coyle’s story is a modern reminder that regimes bent on Israel’s elimination carry the same spiritual and physical danger today.

What the Simple Ignore

For those on the political left who have been indoctrinated to view such regimes with sympathy or even active support, the Bible calls this path simple. The simple keep going. They overlook travel warnings, hostage histories, and repeated declarations of jihad against Israel. They champion causes and policies that embed people in environments where arbitrary arrest, solitary confinement, or worse becomes routine. Coyle’s release brings relief, yet it also exposes the cost of that mindset. Supporting or remaining among determined adversaries of Israel is not compassion. It is playing with fire the Scriptures repeatedly tell us to avoid.

The family’s statement upon Coyle’s return thanked God for sustaining his life and bringing him home. Churches in Colorado that had prayed for their “brother in Christ” now celebrate the answer. This deliverance echoes Psalm 146:7: “The Lord sets the prisoners free.” The same God who freed Coyle is the One who watches over Israel neither slumbers nor sleeps. His pattern has never changed. When His people walk in prudence and stand apart from those fixed on Israel’s destruction, protection and ultimate geula (redemption) follow. Coyle’s release brings relief because President Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio made freeing American captives a top priority from day one. The Trump administration applied sustained diplomatic pressure on the Taliban, with key assistance from leaders in the United Arab Emirates and Qatar who helped mediate the final deal. This is part of a broader effort that has already secured the release of over 100 Americans held unjustly around the world. Rubio personally met with Coyle’s siblings and kept the case front and center until the Taliban finally relented.

Choosing distance from regimes and groups openly committed to wiping Israel off the map is not hatred or isolation. It is biblical wisdom. Nations and movements not resolved against Israel allow safer engagement and genuine help. Those that are resolved do not. The prudent see the danger and take cover. Coyle’s safe return after 421 days stands as both warning and encouragement. God hears the prayers of families and congregations. He delivers the upright. And He continues to guard the nation He calls His own.
