On that terrible day last October 7, when I dropped everything to reenlist in the IDF as a combat medic despite my (relatively) advanced age, I would never have imagined that I would be celebrating my second Hanukkah in olive green and am soon to be entering my third calendar year in service.

It is never convenient to have Milluim (reserve duty). The summons always comes at an inopportune moment…there was the time I was called up over the Hanukkah holiday.  Only after we arrived at the massive base “somewhere in the Negev” for our Milluim we were told that we would be going to a small isolated group of tents in the middle of nowhere.
