Beyond the Binary: A Jewish–Palestinian Friendship That Defies the Conflict

Episode 1 of Our Stories Matter podcast  hosted by the Trauma Informed Learning Alliance, opened this season’s theme, Civil Engagement in an Era of Division, with a conversation that will stay with me long after it ended.

As a co-host and co-producer of Our Stories Matter podcast, I experienced the conversation not only as someone asking questions, but as someone emotionally impacted by what unfolded between Nada Higuera, a Palestinian lawyer, and Heidi Basch-Harod, a Jewish filmmaker, whose friendship defies the conflict and polarization surrounding them.

But this conversation was different.

Nada and Heidi modeled something that feels increasingly rare: the willingness to stay present with one another while holding different lived experiences, truths, grief, and perspectives. They did not erase their differences. They did not force agreement. Instead, they approached each other with curiosity, compassion, honesty, and respect.

One moment that........
