You can’t be a successful activist without the information

1. Invest reading time to familiarize yourself with what kind of outlets are available. The more you read, the sooner you will be able to read less because you can tell from the headlines if the content would inform you.

2. Avoid the news meant to keep you passive, and overwhelmed with feelings. So: don’t look at people dying, don’t listen to reporters trying to enrage you, and don’t listen to analysts with another agenda than just empowering you. So: read the news, and to hell with TV, radio, podcasts.

3. Avoid sitting in an information bubble. Don’t just read the news that comes from one political perspective. Also, don’t read it from one perspective and an opposition thereto that is not factual. So, read truthful reports from left and right, from democrats and socialists, from ethical conservatives and environmentalists, etc.

4. Avoid trusting anyone. Assume at least unaware bias. Trust reasonable left-wing positions from right-wing outlets and vice versa. But, disregard extreme positions just published to ridicule them or to pretend to be balanced (token outliers). Stop being naïve. Democracy is still shaky and only tolerated by the billionaire class as long as the masses are subdued.

5. Avoid balancing all positions until everyone is right (or wrong) leading to paralysis and passivity. Dare to take positions. Figure out who’s the underdog and who’s lying. No motive, no crime. Call for activism. Share the experiences, ideas, and perspectives that only you have.
