Iran’s Democratic Legacy—and the Myth of “Not Ready”

When a German politician claimed that Iranians are “not ready for democracy,” it ignited a powerful and historically rich response from Goldie Ghamari. The Iranian-Canadian lawyer and former parliamentarian didn’t just counter with words; she highlighted a crucial fact that often gets overlooked in Western discussions: Iran set up a constitutional parliament back in 1906—well over twelve years before Germany itself began its journey toward democracy. Her comments, shared in a widely viewed video, do more than just challenge one assertion; they invite us to rethink the broader perspective on how Iran is perceived in Western political conversations.

Ghamari’s perspective serves as a strong critique of the “armchair experts” found within the Western left and far left. These self-styled advocates for human rights often operate within a limited narrative; when an Iranian voice deviates from their pre-approved script, the so-called “inclusion” disappears. Instead, it’s replaced by a concerning tendency to speak over Iranians, dictating what they should think, what they’re prepared for, and what their future ought to look like. This reflects a unique form of “progressive” condescension that sees Iranians not as active agents in their own fate, but as subjects in need of ideological guidance.

Her message is both incisive and historically sound: Iran had a constitutionally elected parliament a full twelve years before Germany even became a democracy.

The conversation about Iran is often viewed through a geopolitical lens—think proxies, deterrence, and the so-called “Axis of Resistance.” However, as Goldie Ghamari compellingly argues, this perspective misses a much more significant truth: the fight of everyday Iranians........
