How Jewish Fragmentation In NYC Helped Mamdani Win
New York City is home to the largest Jewish population outside of Israel. That fact alone makes Zohran Mamdani’s election deeply concerning, not because Jews lacked numbers, but because they lacked unity.
Mamdani did not win despite Jewish opposition. He won in the absence of it.
New York’s Jewish community is vast, diverse, and historically influential. Yet politically, it often operates in silos. Borough Park, Williamsburg, Crown Heights, Manhattan, and Queens each function independently, with different priorities, leadership structures, and alliances. When a candidate emerges whose record raises alarm across communal lines, there is no coordinated mechanism to respond.
That fragmentation mattered.
