The Palestinians can end the occupation if they want

25 0 0

Amid all the violence and blame that have occurred and that continue to occur between Israel and the Palestinians, let’s not lose track of one simple and undeniable fact: if the Palestinians wanted to end the occupation and the settlements, and if they wanted to negotiate a two-state solution that allowed them to have a state, they could.

We all know the conditions under which this could occur. The Palestinians would have to unite under one government that can credibly speak for all the Palestinians, just as Israel has one government that speaks for all Israelis regardless of whom they voted for. They would have to end all terrorism and all support for terrorism because we all know that the main reason that Israelis are reluctant to have a Palestinian state as a neighbor is that they’re afraid that it would turn into Gaza. They would have to renounce the Palestinian right of return except to a Palestinian state because we all know that a Jewish state has an existential need to maintain a Jewish majority so it would never agree to give away that majority. Finally, they would have to agree to cooperate with Israel........
