Rahul Gandhi blames Modi for farmers plight but elicits no response at Kisan Mukti March

Returning from the Kisan Mukti March at Jantar Mantar I confess to being disappointed with the speeches made by opposition leaders at the rally held at the culmination of the march. The turnout of farmers wasn’t too big either. Most of the farmers hailed from Haryana and Uttar Pradesh but there were also some farmers who had come all the way from Tamil Nadu and Odisha. Many of them were dejected about their falling incomes but hoped that coming to Delhi would get the attention of political leaders and the national media.

The families of farmers who committed suicide marching quietly with framed photographs of their departed kin summed up the tragic story of India’s 25-year-long farm crisis. Among the marchers, three distinct groups were the All India Kisan Sabha, those owing allegiance to the Terai belt farmer leader VM Singh, and those under the Swaraj India banner.
